タータン・チェックとは、スコットランドの高原地方（ハイランド地方）で、クラン（氏族）、民族ごとに定められた縦横の縞割が均等になっている多色使いの格子柄の事。
赤、黒、緑、黄色を使った配色が多く、地位や身分などで使用可能な色数なども限定されていた。
