Kyo-raku Sho-kei: Katsura Imperial Villa Study by Kaii Higashiyama.

Katsura Imperial Villa is located at the foot of the Katsura Bridge. The 13,000 tsubo grounds are surrounded by bamboo fences, creating a separate world completely isolated from the outside. A pond, fed by water from the Katsura River, is situated in the center, with a cluster of teahouses arranged around it. The harmony between the beauty of the garden and the beauty of the architecture is superb, and it is highly regarded not only in Kyoto but also worldwide as the essence of Japanese culture.

The study buildings of Katsura Imperial Villa, consisting of the Old Study, Middle Study, and New Palace, are arranged in a staggered formation, forming a single structure. It is a Sukiya-zukuri style, which combines Shoin-zukuri with elements of teahouses. The Old Study was used for enjoying cool breezes and moon viewing, while the Middle Study was used for entertainment such as playing musical instruments. The New Palace is a building suitable for daily life. The Katsura shelf in the first room of the New Palace is luxuriously made from imported precious woods such as Shidan (red sandalwood) and Kyara (agarwood).
